Links
Links allow users to easily move from page to page within a site. To maximize link effectiveness, the following guidelines are offered:
- Use descriptive link labels (i.e., avoid using terms such as "click here").
- Use link text that is consistent with the title of the page to which the user is directed.
- Provide multiple links to important information (e.g., the homepage).
- Use text links over graphics, as they are more easily recognizable as links.
- Clearly indicate visited links.
- Provide indications of clickability cues for links.
- Ensure that non-linked text does not have clickability cues.
- Ensure that embedded links accurately describe the linked page.
- Use link labels of appropriate length (i.e., more than one word, but less than one line).
- Clearly indicate whether a link directs users to a page within the current website or to a page on another website.
