Creating a navigation scheme
A navigation scheme allows users to easily locate information through the use of consistent and descriptive formatting. Some specific recommendations are as follows:
- Group navigation elements and make them distinguishable by placing them in consistent locations across pages where they will be perceived as links.
- Use a clickable "table of contents" on lengthy pages (i.e., provide links that direct users to corresponding information on the page).
- Position major navigation menus on the left side of the page.
- Create descriptive tab titles.
- Minimize the length of navigation-only pages.
