Color

The proper use of color can play an important role in the ease of use and comprehension of your website. Some important factors to consider are:

• Color alone should not be used to convey information.
• For optimal visibility, use black text on white background. If not white, use plain high-contrast backgrounds.
• Solid color backgrounds are best, but if using patterns, they should be extremely subtle.
• Make sure text is in a printable color.
• Be sure to accomodate color-deficient users by:
  • Selecting color combinations that can be distinguished by color-deficient users (do not use red and green together).
  • Ensure that there is a high lightness contrast between foreground and background colors.
  • Increase lightness contrast between colors on opposite ends of the spectrum.
  • Avoid combining light colors from the ends of the spectrum with dark colors from the middle.
